Roman orator Cicero 43 BC (bust)

Marcus Tullius Cicero c.55 BC said,  " To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child,
for what is the worth of human life unless it is woven into the life of our ancestors by the records of history ? "

Cynics encircle the Forest of Family Trees and I am well aware of the honesty they expect.
So I add the following quotation from a North American newspaper of 1905 which has sharpened my wits in this quest.
" Genealogy is not a science. Public records are defective and too often entirely wanting.
Private records and cemetery inscriptions are far from infallible. Family traditions are liable to addition and subtraction at every step.
And besides, the "Father of Lies" has an unknown number of  representatives dead and living. "

(And only a child's mother has any chance of naming the biological father ! ed.)

However the internet is a very public place, and a leap of faith among strangers can be very rewarding.
